The All-New 2019 Hyundai Veloster Offers Increased Power, Better Handling, and More Interior Room
Car names have become rather boring. There are some manufacturers that have been using the same car model names for decades, while others are resurrecting names from the 1960s and 1970s in hopes to add a little pizzazz for the new model. Then we have the Hyundai Veloster, imaginably the best new car name in 20 years.
Whether it was formed from a combination of velocity and the “ster” suffix like roadster and speedster, or whether it’s a contraction of the name of the swift and clever Velociraptors of Jurassic Park fame is not known to us. But what we do know is that the all-new 2019 version of the Hyundai Veloster lives up to its name.
Announced at the North American International Auto Show, the 2019 Veloster features a comprehensive exterior and interior redesign, a new available turbocharged engine, and a suite of new and improved infotainment and connectivity features.
All New Exterior Design
The Veloster merges the design appeal of a sport coupe with the versatility of an additional passenger side rear door in an asymmetrical two-plus-one configuration for easier rear-seat access. In addition, the roofline of the Veloster has been lowered for a unique profile and combines with the unique door configuration to provide a distinctive coupe-inspired appearance.
The diverse design carries through to the interior, with a driver-focused interior layout. Each trim level has unique colors, materials, and accents, further differentiating each model with varying hues and textures. In addition the 2019 Veloster also offers spacious rear cargo capacity, with 563.5 litres of interior volume behind the second row seat, more than Mini Cooper, Mini Clubman, or VW Beetle.
Choice of Two Engines and Transmissions
The base-level engine in the 2019 Veloster is the Nu 2.0 L four-cylinder engine that delivers a peak output of 110 kW at 6,200 rpm and maximum torque of 179 Nm at 4,500 rpm. The Nu 2.0-liter also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings. The Nu engine is paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission with three driver-selectable modes including Normal, Sport, and Smart.
The 1.6 L turbocharged, direct-injected Gamma four-cylinder engine produces 150 kW at 6,000 rpm and 264 Nm of torque from 1,500-4,500 rpm. In addition, there’s an over-boost function that raises peak torque output to 274 Nm under maximum acceleration. The 2019 Veloster Turbo is paired with a standard six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) that features steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifters and SHIFTRONIC transmission gear control. All A/T and DCT models also offer three selectable driving modes, including Normal, Sport and Smart.
Additional Turbo Model Upgrades
All 2019 Veloster Turbos are fitted with a MacPherson strut front suspension, coil springs, gas shock absorbers and a 24-mm diameter front stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is a lightweight independent multi-link design, gas shocks, and a 19-mm stabilizer bar for better handling response. Torque Vectoring Control
All Veloster models offer Torque Vectoring Control (TVC). This active cornering feature utilizing capabilities from the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and powertrain control systems, allows Veloster to improve dynamic cornering during more enthusiastic driving. The TVC redirects power to the outside front wheel in the turn, reducing wheelspin for enhanced cornering grip and improved corner-exit acceleration.
Infotainment and Connectivity
The 2019 Veloster offers a standard seven-inch color LCD display includes AM/FM/MP3 touchscreen audio, auxiliary inputs, and Rear View Monitor. The premium infotainment system includes standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with available Qi wireless-charging capability. Also available are SiriusXM Radio, HD Radio and next-generation Hyundai Blue Link LTE-powered connectivity. The available Heads Up eight-inch touchscreen navigation display includes next-generation Hyundai Blue Link, traffic flow and incident data via HD radio. The Infinity premium audio with eight speakers, including a subwoofer and Clari-Fi music-restoration technology is standard on the Veloster Turbo.
There’s so much more about the all-new 2019 waiting to be discovered. From its new lightweight aluminum suspension components that improve handling by reducing unsprung weight to a full suite of state-of-the-art active and passive safety features to the Hyundai Blue Link application.
The only way to truly appreciate the 2019 Hyundai Veloster is to drive over to Rexdale Hyundai and have a trained product expert walk you through all the standard and available features then send you down the road for a test drive. You may be tempted not to bring the Veloster back.
